Yikes i feel for you. I have a 1 gigabyte per day limit and I find that to be lame. If I download a game client i have to stop my download at 1 gig and resume in 24 hours wich sucks.

LOL I did that too one time and about 3 or 4 months later i got billed for every extra min. I was glad I did not take advantage.

Termite: I didn't sign up for anything, it was a free service upgrade, they upgraded it themselves. First i knew about it was when my internet speed increased and I got an email about the limit etc.

I got a monthly limit on my 320k of 1.6gb. However once you over the cap, you're just at a lower priority so you still have the same speed. However, if someone is clogging up the network and they're still under the limit, you get second priority and a slower connection. I've also recently found out that the line provider has upgraded their plans and we're now paying the same amount for a 1mb connection while the 320k doesn't exist anymore, so we'll be getting that soon.

Quote:
Too find your download speed Divide the speed of your internet connect by 8
e.g
128k would be 128000 / 8 = 16000
16kb/s thats the average speed you would get, It can change depending on, download availability
This is not true. That equation is only for an idealistic line, one that's perfect and if you wanted to be more realistic, you'd need to divide by 10 and it accounts for varibles, line interferance quality of the line, etc.

So in reality, on a 128k modem, you'd most likely be getting speeds of 12.8kBps. 56k, 5.6kBps.

Are you on NTL too? I thought that once you go over the limit you get cut off the net, like you do on some other isp's until the next month.

Yeah im on NTL, im over the limit quite regularly and havent been cut off yet. I think i read something on the site. Dont quote me on this but it was along the lines of
' Until we release software to measure your traffic the download limit isnt in effect'
actually i know i read SOMETHING like that

Nope, because most ISPs include it in their ToS that the connection is subject to change at any time without warning. Had a similar thing with my ISP recently, they announced they were upgrading everyone to 2mbit but introducing 30gb/month caps. Almost all their users threatened to leave, and lo' and behold, the next month they announce the 2mbit upgrade is still going ahead, but no download caps, AND they're changing from 50:1 contention to 30:1 . Seems some ISP's know how to please their customers lol (http:// www.plus.net if you're in the UK).

No idea what I'd do with a 3gb/month cap, just checked my Bandwidth Monitor Pro (http://www.bandwidthmonitorpro.com) stats and so far this month I've downloaded 64.4gb and uploaded 44.7gb and that's only halfway through the month lol. That's what you get for getting addicted to American TV shows downloaded off torrent sites lol. (I use about 1.5gb a week downloading them, heh)

heh, 3 GB is nothing :P I used to play online games with dial-up and a 400 MB d/l limit talk about ewww and pain if I got too into the games and such.. *cringes*.. now I'm still on dial-up but thankfully it's unlimited time & d/l.. heh..

And for those who will say "get ADSL!"... err, I pay $9 Au a month for modem, and cheapest I can get 512/128K ADSL (with a ISP I'd trust! hehehe) is like $60/month while 1,500/256K is like $90 a month... thats a bloody big jump up in prices.. to go from $9 up to $60 or $90.. thats an extra $51 or $81 I'd have to come up with..

So yeah, to all those who say "Get a better ISP!" to the OP.. please understand that not everyone is as lucky as ppl in the US (and Canada? etc and so on) as to be able to get cheap, affordable ADSL. So just saying "get a better isp" is a load of cobblers and not very helpful to the OP's question - the deal he has now could quite easily be the BEST he can get in the country/state/area he is living in - and just because YOU can get better doesn't automatically mean everyone else can too.

My old ISP did that to me, so I immediately switched to a better one. I now enjoy Blueyonder's 1Mbit Cable for the throw-away sum of ??20/month GBP ($36.75/month USD).

I don't have a choice, it's a phone line and internet line package, and we're happy with the phone line. If I swapped isp's the phone line would go.

Ack. Yeah, townsville is unfortunately pretty remote and in the middle of nowhere. Although I'm sure if there is cable availability in your area, Telstra's high end broadband plans aren't too bad. something along the lines of 80-90 a month, but it includes no cap, an up to 8mbit connection, foxtel digital(or just regular foxtel, can't remember) and of course telephone line rental and stuff.

If the guy has a 3GB limit, it's not because he WANTS to. In countries like Russia or Australia the prices on broadband are hair-raising. I am glad I can get limitless broadband for less than 40$ Can per month, yet I know the price of 56K is 40$ US per month in Russia.
Right on the money my good friend. I hail from Australia. Only in the last 2 months have we seen any real competition with broadband.

Broadband can be acquired for 30AU a month*

GOD I hate that *. It includes:
500mg dl limit. Charged 10c a meg over. maximum charge of 80$
256/128
Instaltion fee of $100. once installed changing your phone billing plans requires re-instalation. If within 6 months re-instalation is $200.
Contract of 12 months.

The conditions on some contracts are devestating. I have a Dl limit of 12GB off peak 12Gb on peak (So spaced out 24gb) A month. It doesn't reset by moth but by day. So if on the same day last month I Downloaded 1 gb, I'd recive 1 more GB towards my total.
My broadband costs $79 AU dollars a month payed 3 months in advanced.
Speed is 512/256.
The instalation fee and reinstalation fee mentioned above is caused by our barstard of a comunacations company Telstra claiming it's justifiable because of the work involved with modyfying a connection.

In sumary, Saying Get Broadband is as bad as saying Get Computer . If you don't know what you're doing you are going to come unstuck.

Gotta love beurcracy. Had a simliar afair with my ISP. It's free to upgrade your connection but downgrading it? $30 downgrade fee. Really nice.
Heh so when I first got braodband my Dl limit was 4Gb on peak 6GB off peak. Was paying $79 a month. Seeing how my contact is only 3 months as their prices dropped rather then charge me less they kept upgrading my plan! I still pay $79 dollars a month but my dl limit is now 12gb on peak 12gb off.
Oh BTW my company doesn't charge me when I go over. they "throttle" my connection down to 75k

Yes im quoting myself, i asked if it was again the law, because... the guys on ntl and the 3gb download limit was put onto it without him knowing....before ntl put up connection speeds and put on download limits, the download limit used to be 30gb a month. Im guessin when the guy signed up he signed up for 30gb a month download limit (knowing or not). And thats been taken away from him without him knowing. Know what i mean?
Or this could all mean jibberish cos im kind of drunk

She, i'm female

Umm, I think it was said already that it's in the Terms and Conditions that the connection is subject to change whenever they feel like it, or something like that. I don't really have a choice in the matters, if they change it I can like it or lump it
